A new turistic atraction resort was added to Fuengirola´s large offer of sun, beaches and weather.After the newly re- built downtown or the excellent Maritime Walkside, the new Zoo opened its gates last June 2.001, an enjoyable free- time choice at Fuengirola.
The minucious and realistic replica of the tropical forest habitats make this zoo, a European wonder where fauna, flora and water have been gathered into an exotic eco-system where so remote and magic places are displayed, like Madagascar island, Ecuatorial Africa or Asian South East.
A total 75 different species and 325 animals can be seen at the zoo including rare potamockers, blue dukers, northern talapoints or "false" malasyan gavials, the only place in Spain where they live. This malasyan gavial, a kind of aligator in serius danger of extinction as there are only twelve specimens in Europa, two of them living here at the represented Asian South East area. The Fuengirola zoo is developing a project to help reproduction of these "false" gavials.
Just entering the resort, you´ll admire the vision of millenium baobab tree. No one can stay indiferent looking at this enormous african tree more than 26 meters high, and it turns into an invitation to visit the near Madagasgar isle represented atmosphere where nature and fantasy stand alltogether. Baobabs are also the home of a strange criature, the sitatunga, a water antler who sleeps hidden among its roots. You can also watch curious lemur in the catta, variegata and black varieties. For the first time they share space at a zoo along radiata turtles, another specie in danger of extinction.
The Rain Forest enterprise runs this new Fuengirola Zoo and has planned the inauguration in March of a new facility dedicated to orangutans, another specie in danger of extinction, of whom there will be none living in freem in 2.005 - experts say. The Fuengirola zoo is developing a conservation project whit the help of a program ran bythe European Asociation of Zoos and Aquariums.
To all this different conservation, investigation and aducation items you can also add that this is only the second zoo in the world - along the one in Singapur - which opens at night. This is able in the summer when you can experience the unexpected and magic night life of tropical forest.
